Q + A

When should I arrive in Italy?

We recommend arriving by Saturday, September 26 or Sunday September 27 2026, to settle in, adjust to the time change, and join us for optional welcome events before the big day on September 30th 2026.

Where should I fly into?

Book your flight into Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) in Sardinia. From there, you’ll drive ~45 minutes to Palau Port, then take a quick ferry to La Maddalena Island.

Will transportation be provided?

We’re still finalizing that — we may organize group transfers depending on arrival times, or we’ll share exact instructions for ferries and taxis. Either way, we’ll make it easy for you!

Where should I stay?

We’ll be posting hotel and Airbnb recommendations on our website soon — most guests will stay on La Maddalena Island near the port or town center. Don’t book anything just yet!

How long should I plan to stay?

Plan for 4–5 days. After the wedding, Mike and I will begin our honeymoon, so guests are welcome to explore more, relax, or head home at their own pace.

What’s the dress code?

Think elegant coastal formal. While the ceremony and reception will be outdoors near the sea, we ask that everyone dresses up a bit — this is a special, once-in-a-lifetime moment and we want it to feel elevated. For women: flowy dresses, cocktail dresses, or jumpsuits in soft tones or classic neutrals. For men: suits or dress pants with a button-up — ties are optional, but polished is preferred. We recommend avoiding anything too casual (no jeans, shorts, or beachwear), and wearing comfortable shoes for natural paths and uneven ground.

Will the ceremony and reception be outdoors?

Yes — both will be outside, near the water and cliffs. We recommend bringing a light wrap or jacket for evening breezes.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Please let us know when you RSVP and we’ll make sure our caterers accommodate you — Italy is great for gluten-free, vegetarian, and fresh, simple ingredients.

Will you be organizing excursions for guests?

Yes! We’re planning at least two post-wedding activities: • A beach day or boat ride • Split-day moments with each side of the family More details (and RSVP options) will be posted closer to the date!

What’s the bar hop about?

After the reception, we’ll likely head into La Maddalena Town for a fun, casual nightcap with anyone who wants to keep celebrating — think local wine bars, gelato stops, and seaside cocktails. Totally optional, but we’d love to keep the good vibes going!

Will I need a travel adapter in Italy?

Yes! Italy uses Type C or Type F plugs (round, two-pronged) and a 220V electrical system — different from U.S. outlets. Bring a European plug adapter (and a voltage converter if you’re packing heat tools like curling irons or blow dryers that aren’t dual voltage).

Will my phone work in Italy?

If you have an international plan, yes! Check with your carrier before leaving. Some guests also buy a local eSIM or temporary international plan for the trip. Wi-Fi is widely available in most hotels and cafés.

Can I charge my phone/camera easily?

Totally — just don’t forget your travel adapter! A power bank is also a great idea for long beach or boat days. We’ll be off the grid during the ceremony itself (vibes only 📵✨).

Will hair dryers and curling irons work?

Only if they’re dual voltage. Italy runs on 220V, so U.S. appliances may fry or short out unless labeled for international use. We recommend bringing compact dual-voltage tools or confirming your hotel provides them.

Is tap water safe to drink?

Yes! Tap water in Sardinia is generally safe and clean. That said, many locals (and tourists) prefer bottled water for taste — totally up to you!

What’s the tipping culture like in Italy?

Tipping isn’t expected the way it is in the U.S., but it’s always appreciated. At restaurants, leave a few euros or round up the bill. For taxis or hotel staff, a small gesture goes a long way.

Can I use credit cards or do I need cash?

Most places accept credit cards, especially in La Maddalena town. But small shops, ferries, or cafés may prefer cash — we recommend bringing some euros just in case. You can withdraw from ATMs in town with a debit card too.

Will I need to exchange currency before I go?

You can, but it’s not required. Many travelers wait until they land and simply withdraw euros from an ATM at the airport for the best exchange rate. Be sure to let your bank know you’re traveling internationally!

Are public restrooms easy to find?

They’re around, but not everywhere — especially on Caprera or at scenic viewpoints. We recommend using restrooms at restaurants, cafés, or hotels when you can. Tip: bring a small pack of tissues or wipes — some public restrooms don’t have toilet paper!

Will my phone GPS work in Sardinia?

Yes — just download offline maps (Google Maps) before arriving in case you lose service temporarily. Navigation is generally good, but signage might be limited on rural roads.

What time do things open and close?

Italy runs a little differently — many shops close midday (like 1–4 PM) for riposo (rest). Restaurants often open for dinner around 7:30 or 8 PM. Always check hours in advance and embrace the slower pace ☀️

Do I need to dress a certain way when sightseeing?

In general, Italians dress a bit more polished — even casually. You’ll be most comfortable in smart-casual outfits for dinners or towns, and modest attire if you’re visiting churches or cathedrals (covered shoulders/knees is respectful).

Is Sardinia safe?

Yes! Sardinia is known for being laid-back and family-friendly. Like anywhere, keep an eye on your valuables in tourist spots, but overall it’s a peaceful and very safe place to travel.

Do we need a rental car for the wedding in La Maddalena?

It’s highly recommended. La Maddalena is a small island, but having a rental car makes it much easier to get around—especially if you want to explore beaches, reach the ceremony site, or stay in a villa. There’s limited public transport, and taxis can be unreliable or expensive.

Can we bring a rental car onto the island?

Yes! If you rent a car on the mainland (in Olbia or Cagliari), you can bring it over on the car ferry from Palau to La Maddalena. Ferries run frequently and the crossing takes about 15 minutes.

Is it better to rent on the island or before arriving?

It’s usually better to rent your car at the Olbia Airport (or wherever you land) and bring it with you. It gives you more options and better prices. Car rental agencies on La Maddalena are limited and can sell out during wedding season.

Do we need a special license to drive in Italy?

Yes — if you’re from outside the EU, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your regular license. It’s easy to get online or at AAA.

I live in Vacaville and don’t have a passport yet. What do I do?

You’ll need to apply in person. Make an appointment at the Vacaville Post Office (300 Merchant St) or another nearby location. Bring: A certified birth certificate (with seal) A valid photo ID (like your driver’s license) A passport photo (CVS, Walgreens, or UPS can take this) The completed DS-11 application (fill out online, print, don’t sign until you’re there) A check or money order for payment — credit cards aren’t accepted for the government portion

How long does it take to get my passport?

Yes — La Maddalena town has small markets, bakeries, cafes, and restaurants within walking distance. It’s easy to grab espresso, snacks, or picnic items locally.

Is it buggy or humid? Should we pack bug spray?

September isn’t peak mosquito season, but it’s still smart to pack bug spray just in case — especially for evenings near the water.

What’s the weather like in Sardinia in late September?

It’s honestly perfect. Expect sunny skies, warm temps, and a light sea breeze — ideal for outdoor ceremonies, coastal dinners, and swims.

Will it be hot or cold?

The daytime temperature will likely be in the mid-70s°F (24°C) — warm but not hot. Evenings cool off a little (mid to high 60s°F), so bring a light jacket or wrap for sunset and nighttime events.

Is it going to be windy at the ceremony?

Not really. Unlike summer months, late September has calm coastal breezes — just enough to feel refreshing, not enough to mess up your hair or blow things away. We picked this time on purpose!

Is it still beach weather?

100%! The sea is still warm — around 72–74°F (22–23°C) — so you can definitely swim, snorkel, or lounge seaside.

Should I pack for rain?

Rain is rare this time of year but not impossible. It’s smart to pack a small umbrella or light rain jacket, just in case.

What kind of clothes should I bring?

Think: sunny, coastal Italy. Bring light layers, a swimsuit, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, and one elevated outfit for the wedding/reception (coastal elegance = not too casual). Evenings get breezy, so a light jacket or sweater is a good idea.

Will GPS show our ceremony location correctly?

Not always. The seaside chapel doesn’t have a marked address like a traditional building. We’ll share a pin or map link closer to the wedding so you can easily find it by car or on foot — don’t worry!

Are roads steep or difficult to drive on La Maddalena?

Some are narrow or curvy near beaches or the cliffs, but nothing dangerous. Just drive slow, stay alert, and know that most guests will be totally fine with a compact rental car.

Is parking easy near the ceremony or in town?

There is limited parking near the chapel and popular spots in town, so give yourself extra time. We’ll include exact parking info (and a carpool suggestion) before the wedding.

Will the bride and wedding guests arrive at the ceremony at the same time?

Not exactly. Guests will arrive a little earlier to get settled, enjoy the views, and be in place before the ceremony begins. Hannah (the bride!) will arrive separately and a bit later — we want that big “here comes the bride” moment to feel extra special. We’ll share exact timing and directions closer to the date so everyone knows where to go and when. Don’t worry — you won’t be left guessing!

How much cash should I bring?

Around €100–200 should be enough for casual expenses. You can always use ATMs or cards for most things.

Are there ATMs on La Maddalena?

Yes, there are a few ATMs in town where you can withdraw Euros.

Do I need travel insurance?

While it’s not required, we highly recommend it! Travel insurance can help if your flight gets canceled, your bags go missing, or you need medical care while abroad. It’s an easy way to protect your trip (and your peace of mind). Look for a plan that covers international medical care, trip delays, and cancellations—just in case life throws a curveball.

What time should I be ready?

Aim to be dressed and ready by 3:30 PM so we can head to the ceremony location with time to spare.

Where is the ceremony?

We’ll be getting married at a beautiful little seaside chapel on La Maddalena Island. The exact location and directions will be sent closer to the day.

What time does the ceremony start?

Around 5:30 PM, just in time for golden hour. Please arrive at the chapel by 4:45 PM for welcome drinks and photos!

What happens after the ceremony?

We’ll toast with prosecco and take some golden hour photos. Then we’ll head to a nearby villa or restaurant for a candlelit dinner celebration, speeches, dancing, and dessert.

What’s the best app for booking flights within Italy or around Europe?

Use Ryanair – it’s like the European version of Southwest. Super cheap and easy to hop from one country to another or within Italy. Just keep in mind: it’s no-frills, and baggage fees can add up, so read the fine print.

How do I book train tickets in Italy?

Download the Trenitalia app. It’s the main Italian train company and super convenient for getting around mainland Italy (Rome, Florence, Naples, etc.). You can view schedules, reserve seats, and store tickets all in one place.

Are there passes for museums or monuments?

Yes! If you’re exploring historic cities like Florence, you can get a Firenze Card, which gives you access to multiple museums and attractions for one price—around $80. It often includes “skip-the-line” privileges, which is amazing during busy seasons. You can buy it by opening Safari on your phone and searching “Firenze Card” — it’ll take you to the official site to purchase and download the digital pass.

Do I need a transportation app for Sardinia or La Maddalena?

Sardinia is more car-based, so if you plan to explore the island beyond the wedding, you may want to rent a car or use local taxis. You can also ask your hotel or Airbnb host for taxi contact info—they usually have someone reliable they recommend.

Should I use Uber in Italy?

Uber exists in major cities like Rome and Milan, but it’s limited in most of Italy. In Sardinia or smaller towns, taxis or private drivers are more common.

Wait… aren’t the Olympics happening in Italy in 2026?

Yes! The Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6–22, 2026. But don’t worry—our wedding in September is months after the games, so crowds and prices won’t be affected.

Will the Olympics affect flights or hotel prices for the wedding?

Nope! Since the games are in February and the wedding is in September, they’ll be long over by the time we all travel. It’s a completely different season and region, so no Olympic stress here.

Can I add Olympic sites to my trip if I want to explore more of Italy?

Totally! If you’re planning extended travel before or after the wedding, you could check out Milan or Cortina—they’ll still have some buzz and upgrades from the games. But it’s a bit of a trip from Sardinia, so you’d want to plan extra time.

Should I book earlier just in case the Olympics create extra travel demand?

Since the Olympics are in a different season and part of Italy, there’s no rush on that front—but booking early is always smart for summer travel in Europe!
